Whitewash or Eyewash?

Today, our Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh is visiting our city - Chandigarh. Local editions of prominent national dailies and front pages of local news-papers are flooded with the news on the preparations going on for the planned visit to keep everything in order. There is nothing wrong in all this work as he is the person who is heading a big nation like India and deserves respect and nice treatment.

But, there is something ridiculous and something annoying. What is ridiculous is that local administration and municipal council has hurriedly done patch work and is mostly doing cover up on their inefficient and lazy ways of working. With the help of hundreds of labourers, road berms and trees have been painted to give a refreshing look to roads. Shrubs and wild grass alongside the roads has been removed and everything is looking spic and spine. It is good and bad at the same time. It is good since maintenance work is the right of every city. It is bad since it is done only on the roads en route of the cavalcade of our Prime Minister.

Isn't it ridiculous one? It is just an eyewash trying to fool the head of a nation making him think of the city as well administered and maintained! Perhaps he too is well aware of the reality because it must be happening at the every town or place he visits!!

It is a complete eyewash. But perhaps it is being done at all places in the world. Not just at professional and social scope but at personal level also. Actually, such actions stem from personal lives and show their head at other levels of living. Most of us are look very different to others than to themselves. We behave, speak and deal in a way which is acceptable to others, but deep inside, there is someone who does quite opposite to our outer personality.

Do this one exercise when you are meeting someone. Observe what is going inside you. What are your thoughts and feelings when interacting with the other person. You may realise that many a times your thoughts and words you speak are at contrast. You might be speaking opposite to what you might be thinking at that moment.

Here, I am trying to question the nature of 'keeping up appearances'. If one's thinking process is always different from the words one utters and feelings are opposite to the face expressions, then that person is not different from what Chandigarh administration is doing for last 3-4 days. What will such a person do? He is negative inside in his approach towards himself, family, friends and others. But at the same time, he is scared of being caught of his negativity and fears. The only solution for him is to keep up appearances and show acceptable character, hiding weaknesses of his character. But...such behaviour is nothing different from patch-work done on roads and will someday show its true colours. Because, patch-work is just an eyewash and will be diluted someday and will show its original rough and ugly shape at the right moment.

Here, in this post I have just reacted to the nature of doing eyewash, both at personal levels and broad levels. I have not tried to give any solution to such habits. Please post your ideas in the form of COMMENTS so that we work together to get rid of such things at personal level and administration level.
